A Monumental Catrina Celebrating Puerto Morelos Traditions: El Cid Resorts’ Tribute to Hanal Pixán

An artistic creation filled with symbolism, traditional embroidery, and meaningful details honoring Yucatecan culture and the identity of the Mexican Caribbean.

As Puerto Morelos celebrates Hanal Pixán, one of the most meaningful traditions of Mayan culture, El Cid Resorts joins the festivities with a monumental Catrina honoring Mexican heritage, the cultural richness of the Yucatán Peninsula, and the unique elements that make this destination so special.

As part of the 2026 Janal Pixan festival, themed Mar de Almas (Sea of Souls), this creation participates in the monumental Catrina contest, inviting residents and visitors to discover an artistic tribute in which every detail tells a story. Source: Puerto Morelos City Council

A Catrina Inspired by Yucatecan Traditions

This monumental figure is an artistic interpretation of Yucatán’s culture and traditions, inspired by Hanal Pixán, a Mayan expression meaning “food for the souls” and a celebration dedicated to honoring loved ones who have passed away.

Her attire recreates the Yucatecan terno, the traditional formal dress worn by mestiza women; it consists of a *hipil* (the upper garment) worn over a *fustán* (the lower garment), featuring vibrant floral embroidery that contrasts beautifully with the black fabric. Delicate lace, ornamental trims, and white ruffles evoke the traditional details of the hipil and fustán, reimagined through artisanal craftsmanship on a monumental scale.

Filigree earrings, a rosary, a red rebozo, and an elegant hairstyle adorned with flowers complete this tribute to the beauty and identity of Yucatecan women.

Beyond her impressive presence, the Catrina invites visitors to discover the symbols and details that connect Yucatán’s traditions with the history and identity of Puerto Morelos.

Details That Tell a Story

The Yucatecan Maquech: A Symbol of Love and Fidelity

Among the Catrina’s accessories is a brooch inspired by the maquech, a traditional Yucatecan beetle used as jewelry and associated in regional legends with eternal love and fidelity. This distinctive element adds deeper meaning to the creation and celebrates one of Yucatán’s most unique cultural traditions.

A Rosary Featuring the Leaning Lighthouse of Puerto Morelos

Around her neck, the Catrina wears a rosary featuring a representation of the iconic leaning lighthouse of Puerto Morelos at its center, one of the destination’s most recognizable landmarks.

This detail brings together religious tradition and the town’s coastal identity, honoring its history and enduring connection to the Caribbean Sea.

It is also a tribute to the destination itself and to the landscapes, stories, and symbols that define its character.

A Candle to Light the Way

In her right hand, the Catrina holds a candle symbolizing the light that guides and welcomes souls during Hanal Pixán. Its presence evokes remembrance and the enduring bond between those who have passed away and the loved ones who keep their memories alive.

A Little Companion: A Nod to the Xoloitzcuintli

At her side, a small skeletal-style dog, attached to a leash held in the Catrina’s left hand, evokes the Xoloitzcuintli, the dog that, in Mexica tradition, accompanied and guided souls on their journey through Mictlán, the underworld of the dead.

This detail honors the ancient symbolism of dogs as companions and guides on the journey to the afterlife, reinforcing the spirit of remembrance and connection with departed loved ones that defines these celebrations.

Traditional Embroidery, Lace, and an El Cid Resorts Signature

Vibrant floral embroidery and delicate white lace make the dress one of the most striking elements of the creation. The El Cid Resorts logo is subtly integrated into the lace detailing along the skirt, adding a distinctive touch that connects the artwork to the brand.

The ornamental base also deserves a closer look. Its floral designs and ruffles are inspired by the traditional tablecloths used to decorate Hanal Pixán altars, where families place offerings in honor of their loved ones.

Marigolds: Colors of Remembrance

Vibrant cempasúchil, or Mexican marigolds, will decorate the ground surrounding the Catrina, adding warm orange and golden hues to the installation. Traditionally associated with remembrance, these flowers evoke the connection between the living and those who have passed away, complementing this tribute to the season’s traditions.

A Creation Made with Reused Materials

The creation of this monumental Catrina also stands out for its use of recycled and repurposed materials. Its structure incorporates items such as cardboard and water jugs, while fabric scraps from local production were reused to cover and finish the figure.

Through creativity and craftsmanship, these materials were given a new purpose and transformed into a meaningful work of art. In this way, the Catrina not only celebrates the traditions of Hanal Pixán but also highlights the value of reusing resources and creating with environmental awareness.

A Tribute to the Artisans of Leona Vicario

This monumental Catrina also pays tribute to the talented artisans of Leona Vicario, a community in Puerto Morelos where creativity and traditional craftsmanship help preserve the region’s cultural identity.

Through its embroidery, ornamental details, and Yucatecan-inspired attire, the creation recognizes the value of artisanal knowledge and the people who keep these cultural expressions alive for future generations.

Hanal Pixán: A Tradition That Keeps Our Roots Alive

In Puerto Morelos, this tradition blends with the destination’s coastal identity through artistic expressions and cultural activities that invite residents and visitors to discover the richness of local customs.

For El Cid Resorts, participating in the 2026 Janal Pixan festival is an opportunity to celebrate this cultural heritage, recognize the talent of local artisans, and strengthen our connection with the community.

El Cid Resorts: Celebrating the Culture and Traditions of Puerto Morelos

Our monumental Catrina is much more than a decorative figure. She is a composition of symbols, colors, and intricate details celebrating Yucatecan traditions and honoring the cultural identity of Puerto Morelos.

From the maquech and the leaning lighthouse to the traditional embroidery, candle, little companion, and marigolds, every element contributes to a story of culture, remembrance, and belonging.

At El Cid Resorts, we are proud to be part of the celebrations that keep our roots alive, recognize the talent of local communities, and allow us to share the cultural richness of the Mexican Caribbean with those who visit us.

Because as long as we remember, our loved ones will continue to live on among us.
