Fun And Fascinating Local Attractions & Sights
Hotel Marina El Cid Spa & Beach Resort is near some of the best tourist spots and attractions
in Cancun and the Riviera Maya. Travel back in time at the ruins of Tulum. Immerse yourself in
the breathtaking beauty of a rainforest. Enjoy amazing snorkeling, diving, horseback riding,
and other diversions. Your choices are endless. Some of the most popular sights include:
- Tres Rios Ecopark - A gorgeous tropical reserve located 10 minutes south of Playa del Carmen.
- Xcaret - Created to resemble an "Eco Maya" theme park. Attractions include a re-enactment of a traditional Maya ballcourt game, butterfly pavilion, traditional Mexican dance and music, small zoo, and much more. The swimming here is excellent and the water theme parks rival Disney World.
- Xel-Ha -- A freshwater bay that meets the ocean. Great for snorkeling or diving as many sea creatures make their home in the bay and its tributaries. There are also many well-trained lifeguards on duty.
- Aktun Chen -- Beautiful underground dry caves with stalactite and stalagmite formations and a spectacular fresh water cenote. You might even be lucky enough to see spider monkeys. Poisonous and non-poisonous snakes can be seen at the serpentarium. Located in the jungle, between Akumal and Xel-Ha.
- Sian Ka'an Biosphere Reserve -- Just south of Tulum, the reserve has an abundant amount of flora and fauna and several distinct natural ecosystems. The reserve contains unexcavated Maya ruins, freshwater canals, cenotes, mangroves, lagoons, and inlets. The fishing village of Boca Paila is within the reserve.
- Xaman-Ha Aviary -- Home to exotic birds such as scarlet macaws, flamingos, and herons.
- Punta Laguna: Spend time with spider monkeys and howler monkeys in their natural habitat. Trek in the jungle and travel Punta Laguna by boat. Birds, deer, turtles, and crocodiles are among the wildlife to be seen. There is also a Mayan ruin site.
- Nohoch Jungle Crossing -- Snorkel in one of world's largest discovered subterranean river systems. In this ancient natural miracle, you will experience spectacular geological formations and crystal-clear fresh water.
- Jardin Botanico del Dr. Alfredo Barrera -- Beautiful botanical gardens located a few minutes south of Puerto Morelos. Experience exotic species of tropical fauna, displayed in the natural settings of a rainforest.
- The Cedam Maritime Museum -- Houses an interesting display of artifacts and wreckage from shipwrecks along the coastline.
- Rancho Loma Bonita - Ride horseback through jungle mangroves, lakes, and the Caribbean Sea. You can also ride a 4-wheeler, snorkel, bicycle, or kayak in and around lagoons, or swim in the pool.
- Crococun Crocodile Park and Regional Zoo -- Similar to the crocodile parks in Florida. Features regional animals and some imported ones. Guides speak English.
- Playa del Carmen -- The Mayan Riviera's premier spot for nightlife. There are lots of clubs and restaurants offering an eclectic array of party possibilities.
- Tulum Pueblo -- The last town before Hwy 307 turns into a desolate jungle road. There is good shopping in Tulum, with prices generally cheaper than in Playa del Carmen.
- Tulum Ruins - Fascinating Mayan ruins, with a good crafts market.
- Hacienda Isabela -- A re-creation of a traditional Mexican hacienda. Each Thursday night features a "Mexican Fiesta Show" put on by a troupe of entertainers from Cancun.
