Julio Berdegue Aznar
Founder of El Cid Group
1931 - 2007
Throughout his life, Julio Berdegue Aznar was a man of many roles; a little boy from Madrid who fled with his family from the Spanish Civil War, a political refugee in México, an outstanding student from the ¨Instituto Politecnico Nacional, a proud father, a real estate developer, an owner of El Cid Resorts , and a role model for new businessmen in his country. He was a visionary with a social conscience who planned for growth and development while preserving his natural environment.
Biology was his First Passion
Julio followed his father’s wish to study medicine but soon changed to pursue his passion in biology by obtaining a degree at the ¨Instituto Politecnico Nacional¨.
Then he met his wife Dolores Sacristán in México and they were together for five years during which Julio traveled through the United States for research. They married in México City and had four sons -- two who currently maintain the family business. Carlos Berdegue is currently President and CEO of El Cid Resorts and Fernando Berdegue is Managing Director of El Cid Real Estate and Development.
From the largest shrimp fleet in the Pacific to Hospitality and Tourism
While he was deeply involved in the fishing industry and preservation of sea life, Julio Berdegue foresaw the development of tourism in Mazatlán. He approached Fonatur, México´s department of tourism development, with the intent to invest in the area. Julio was told that Cancún, Puerto Vallarta and, of course, Mazatlán would be the most profitable destinations. Fonatur provided the financial resources necessary for Julio to build his first hotel -- El Cid Granada Country Club -- after which he sold the assets in his fishing company and continued to build five other resorts in Mazatlán, Riviera Maya/Cancún and Cozumel. His vision and faith in the industry led to a prosperous, family owned business that today incorporates El Cid Resorts, El Cid Real Estate, El Cid Vacation Club and Pronatours. |
